Required Coverage Minimum - 20/40/15 Iowa auto insurance law states that if you register and operate a motor vehicle in the state you must purchase insurance policies with a minimum coverage limit of $20,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $40,000 for all injuries in a single accident, and $15,000 for property damage. Note, these figures are minimum limits. Therefore, it is considered prudent to obtain higher limits, especially if you own assets should you be sued for liability.

Optional Coverage - Iowa auto insurance companies offer optional coverage: medical payments, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage.
You should consider purchasing any or all of these optional coverage policies, especially Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverage. These policies help cover the cost of your injuries and property damage should you be in an accident with a driver with inadequate liability insurance.
Proof of Insurance - Iowa law requires that you carry proof of mandated insurance policies in your vehicle(s) at all times.
Penalty for Failure to Comply - Iowa law states that failure to comply penalty for a first time offense is very minor compared to other states, $100.

Non-Seatbelt Use Despite a lenient penalty for not having the required minimum liability insurance, you can be pulled over for non-seat belt usage. The penalty for seatbelt noncompliance, is damage mitigation up to 5% maximum if you are involved in an accident or a $10 fine for front seat non-compliance if pulled over by police.
